The Orkney Managed Clinical Network for Coronary Heart Disease was set up to join together all of the different people involved in coronary heart disease services in Orkney. We want to make sure that everyone gets the same high level of care no matter where they live. We want to make top class training and education available to all people working here. We want to make sure that patients are involved and have a say in their care, and that we keep everyone informed of what we are doing. We also need to make sure that our services are the best available by measuring them against national guidelines.

Achievements in 2004:

  • Angina plan training started for a number of nursing staff

  • Health Promotion Officer (Physical Activity) post

  • New Opportunities funding for Phase III and IV Cardiac Rehabilitation

  • Exercise Referral on prescription

  • Heart Failure Strategy approved by NHS Orkney Board

  • Talks and newspaper articles by Cardiac Nurse

Some of our plans for 2005:

  • Assistant Resuscitation Officer post

  • Improve diagnostic resources—echocardiography and BNP testing

  • Keep a database of all people tested and subsequently diagnosed with Heart Failure

  • Patient information leaflet for local distribution on ‘What to do if you think you’re having a heart attack’

  • Work on the ‘seamless’ patient pathway from Aberdeen to home following cardiac surgery

  • Identify and address staff training needs
